Dans cet article, nous poursuivons la définition d’un cadre ontologique et d’une espèce d’ontologies baptisées « ontologies épistémiques » en nous focalisant sur les entités complexes, physiques et mentales, peuplant le monde. Ces entités sont constituées d’autres entités dont elles dépendent existentiellement unilatéralement. Parmi ces entités complexes figurent les états de choses (dans la sphère physique) et les propositions et événements (dans la sphère mentale). Pour rendre compte de leur unité, nous faisons appel à la figure ontologique de la ‘connexion’, en référence à la notion de nexus de Gustav Bergmann. Du côté physique, nous identifions différentes espèces de connexions, à savoir des connexions de qualités particulières à leur objet porteur et des connexions d’objets et de processus entre eux. Nous conjecturons que les états de choses sont exclusivement des connexions. Du côté mental, nous assimilons les relations à des constituants conceptuels de nos connaissances du monde dont le rôle est de mettre en rapport des entités. Nous conjecturons qu’il n’existe pas de relations physiques.
In this article, we pursue the definition of an ontological framework and a species of ontologies called “epistemic ontologies” by focusing on the complex entities, physical and mental, that populate the world. These entities unify other entities on which they unilaterally existentially depend. These complex entities include states of affairs (in the physical sphere) and propositions and events (in the mental sphere). To account for their unity, we appeal to the ontological figure of ‘connection’, in reference to Gustav Bergmann’s notion of nexus. On the physical side, we identify different kinds of connections, namely connections of particular qualities to their carrier object, and connections of objects and processes to each other. We conjecture that physical states of affairs are exclusively connections. On the mental side, we equate relations with the conceptual constituents of our knowledge of the world, whose role is to put together entities. We conjecture that there are no physical relations.
